Comprehensive Chiropractic Services
Chiropractic care means taking a holistic view of the whole person when looking for the root of an illness. Dr. Tod Ichishita of Big Island Chiropractic believes in providing patients with the tools they need to be active in their own recovery and in maintaining their own health — from precise spinal adjustments to the supporting therapies below.
Core Care
Adjustments & Manipulation
Chiropractic adjustments are a fundamental aspect of chiropractic care, meant to restore proper alignment and function to the spine and other joints. These adjustments involve the application of controlled force, helping to alleviate pain, improve mobility, and allow the nervous system to function at its full capacity.
The Purpose: The primary purpose of chiropractic adjustments is to correct misalignments in the spine, known as subluxations. These misalignments can interfere with the nervous system and cause muscle imbalances, leading to pain, numbness, and reduced mobility. By restoring proper alignment, adjustments help reduce nerve interference and allow the body to move normally.
The Process: Before performing an adjustment, Dr. Ichishita conducts a thorough assessment of the patient's health history and current concerns, which may include physical examinations and diagnostic imaging. The adjustment method used may vary depending on the patient's needs, ranging from gentle manual adjustments to more advanced methods. Patients often report feeling relief soon after an adjustment, with many experiencing improved range of motion and reduced pain.
Benefits: Chiropractic adjustments offer benefits for people of all ages — pain relief for conditions such as back pain, neck pain, headaches, and joint discomfort, along with improved mobility and flexibility, better posture, reduced stress, and improved overall body function.
Cold Laser Therapy
While pain and injuries in the soft tissues can often be reached and treated through techniques such as massage therapy, they sometimes lie deep below the surface, where more traditional techniques aren't always able to reach.
Deep Tissue Injuries: Injuries can develop in the deep tissues from repetitive stress or old, unhealed injuries. When you consistently carry out the same actions — poor posture, lifting heavy items — many tissues are activated, but stretching or a traditional massage usually only relieves tension close to the surface. Old, unhealed injuries often develop trigger points, scar tissue, and adhesions, leading to a build-up of tension that impedes necessary blood flow.
Symptoms: Trigger points are tender knots that can trigger sharp pains and restrict range of motion. They can also press against nerves and surrounding tissue, leading to numbness and tingling. Headaches, chronic neck and back pain, and extremity pain are also common.
How It Helps: Cold laser technology uses low levels of laser energy to penetrate several inches of soft tissue. Aimed at the injured site, cells absorb the energy and stimulate a natural chemical reaction that increases blood flow, causes damaged tissue to regenerate, breaks up trigger points and adhesions, relieves pain, and improves range of motion.
Interferential Electro-Therapy
Interferential Electro-Therapy (IFT) is a non-invasive therapy that uses low-frequency electrical currents to stimulate the muscles and nerves beneath the skin. These currents "interfere" with each other to reach deep tissues safely and comfortably — feeling smoother and less intense than other forms of electrical stimulation.
How It Helps: Pain often comes from inflammation, muscle tension, or restricted blood flow. IFT works by increasing circulation and reducing muscle spasms, helping oxygen and nutrients reach the tissues that need them most. The electrical impulses also encourage the body to release endorphins — natural pain relievers, with no side effects.
Helpful For: Back or neck pain, sports-related injuries, joint stiffness, muscle spasms or strain, and post-surgical recovery support.
What to Expect: Small pads are placed on the skin, and a gentle current begins to pulse through the targeted area. Patients often describe a mild tingling sensation that eases tension. Most sessions last 10 to 15 minutes, often combined with adjustments, stretching, or other rehabilitative care.
Inversion Table Therapy
Inversion therapy involves positioning the body upside down to create traction. Applying traction directly to the spine stretches it out and creates larger spaces between the vertebrae, which alleviates pressure and prevents damage to vertebrae, spinal discs, and nerves. The stretching also promotes better circulation, helping injured body parts recover faster and reducing inflammation.
What It Helps: Back pain, neck discomfort, degenerative disc disease, herniated discs, sciatica, pinched nerves, and scoliosis.
What to Expect: Dr. Ichishita will confirm inversion therapy is right for your condition before you try it. A standard inversion table comes with safety harnesses, and your chiropractor sets the table at the right angle for both benefit and comfort. Inversion therapy can elevate blood pressure, particularly affecting the eyes, so treatment duration is carefully controlled and adjusted based on how your body responds.
Ultrasound Therapy
Ultrasound therapy uses high-frequency sound waves to create gentle heat deep within soft tissue — deeper than a hand or a heating pad can reach on its own.
How It Helps: The heat and vibration increase local circulation, relax tight muscles, and help reduce inflammation and stiffness. It's often paired with adjustments to speed recovery in a specific injured area.
Helpful For: Muscle spasm, joint stiffness, and soft-tissue inflammation.
Electrical Muscle Stimulation
Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS) applies a low-level electrical current to the muscles surrounding an injury, causing gentle, controlled contractions.
How It Helps: Those contractions help reduce muscle spasm, ease tension, and support the body's own healing response — a comfortable, non-invasive complement to chiropractic adjustments.
Helpful For: Muscle spasm, tension, and recovery support alongside adjustments.
Therapeutic Exercise
Therapeutic exercise is a program of targeted stretches and movements crafted for your specific condition and goals — not a general fitness routine.
How It Helps: Guided movement helps your body recover faster and continue the progress made in the office between visits, building strength and flexibility around the area that needs it most.
See the Exercise Library for examples of the exercises you may be given as part of your plan.
Conditions We Treat
Neck Pain
Chiropractic Adjustments: When performed in the neck, an adjustment is called cervical manipulation — a very precise adjustment that can not only help with pain, but also greatly improve mobility that may have become limited due to whiplash or other injuries.
Stretches & Exercise: When your neck is stiff and sore, stretches and therapeutic exercises help restore flexibility and mobility, with an individual plan designed for your particular body and condition.
Cold Laser & Ultrasound: Cold laser uses light to reach deep into tissue to reduce inflammation and stimulate recovery. Ultrasound uses sound waves to heat and vibrate tissue, increasing circulation and decreasing inflammation, stiffness, and spasm.
Inversion Table: Can help with neck pain by increasing the space between the cervical vertebrae — helpful for neck disc issues or pinched nerves.
Back Pain
Treatment may consist of chiropractic adjustments to align your spine, myofascial release, ultrasound, or cold laser therapy. You may be taught stretching and strengthening exercises to do at home, and an inversion table can be used to ease tension in your spine through decompression.
Causes: An injury in an auto accident, a slip and fall at work, or while playing sports can lead to back pain. Poor posture can cause pain in the neck, shoulders, and back. Degenerative disc disease may also be a factor, treatable with decompression techniques.
What to Expect: After your evaluation, you'll typically work with the chiropractor a few times a week early on. Many patients find immediate relief after their first adjustment. As treatment progresses, you'll feel better for longer between sessions, and after a few weeks of consistent therapy, care often tapers to about once a week.
Headaches
Types & Causes: Tension headaches are the most common, often from muscle tightness, stress, or poor posture. Migraines tend to have a neurological component. Cervicogenic headaches start in the neck but are felt in the head, often from joint restrictions or muscular strain. Headaches are often symptoms of something deeper — tight shoulders, forward head posture, past injuries, or jaw tension.
How Adjustments Help: Precise chiropractic adjustments restore proper alignment in the cervical spine. When joints move more freely and pressure is reduced on surrounding tissue, the body often experiences less pain and better rest. For many patients, regular adjustments reduce the frequency and intensity of headaches over time.
Supporting Therapies: Physical therapy — stretches and strengthening exercises — helps correct posture and prevent recurring strain. Myofascial release targets the tight connective tissue around the head, neck, and upper back, especially useful for stress-related tension or a history of whiplash.
Sciatica
Sciatica isn't a diagnosis in itself, but a symptom of another issue — often a herniated disc, bone spur, or spinal misalignment putting pressure on nerve roots in the lumbar spine. It can cause burning or searing pain in the leg or buttock, numbness or tingling in the foot or toes, weakness moving the leg or foot, and constant pain on one side that worsens while sitting.
Chiropractic Adjustments: Precise spinal manipulations realign the vertebrae in the lower back, helping move disc material away from the nerve, reducing inflammation and restoring mobility.
Traction on an Inversion Table: Uses gravity to open space between the vertebrae, gently stretching the spine to relieve the "pinched" feeling and allow increased blood flow to the affected discs.
Therapeutic Exercise: Strengthens the supporting muscles of the core and lower back, improving flexibility and stabilizing the spine to prevent future flare-ups.
Joint Pain
Whether the problem is in your shoulders, hips, knees, or ankles, manual adjustments restore proper alignment to the skeletal system. By ensuring joints are positioned correctly, we reduce the mechanical stress that causes wear and tear, lowering inflammation and allowing the body to heal naturally.
Decompression: An inversion table helps manage joint pain originating in the spine and hips, using gravity to create space between joints and take pressure off compressed nerves and discs — a gentle traction that can be a game-changer for chronic stiffness.
Therapeutic Stretching & Exercise: Joint pain often lingers because surrounding muscles have become weak or overly tight. With a background in athletic training and sports medicine, Dr. Ichishita teaches stretching and exercise routines that strengthen these supporting structures and build a stronger foundation to prevent future flare-ups.
Knee Pain
Common Causes: Muscle strains, ligament sprains, repetitive stress, joint dysfunction, overuse, and age-related wear and tear can all affect knee function. In some cases, knee pain is also influenced by the alignment and movement of the hips, pelvis, or ankles.
How Chiropractic Care Helps: Depending on your needs, treatment may include gentle joint adjustments, soft tissue techniques, and therapeutic exercises that promote strength and flexibility. Improving joint mobility and addressing movement patterns throughout the body may help reduce stress placed on the knee during everyday activities.
Long-Term Joint Health: Building strength, improving flexibility, and encouraging proper movement helps support long-term joint health and reduce the likelihood of recurring discomfort, with regular follow-up visits to monitor progress and adjust your plan.
